Rec. Review

Horror – Starring Manuela Velasco, Ferran Terraza, Jorge-Yamam Serrano, Pablo Rosso, David Vert. Written by Jaume Balaguero, Paco Plaza and Luiso Berdejo. Directed by  Jaume Balaguero and Paco Plaza

Pretty, perky TV presenter, Angela and cameraman Pablo are filming through the night at a fire station in Barcelona for a show called, ‘While you’re asleep’. Bored with the lack of action, Angela is excited to accompany a couple of firemen – Manu and Alex – on a call out to help an old woman trapped in an apartment building. Expecting a routine call, instead Angela, Pablo and the firemen find themselves sealed inside the apartment building by the Health Authorities with a couple of policemen, the residents, a crazy, blood-thirsty old lady and a sick child, as a zombie-like virus spreads out of control.

With no opening credits, Rec opens with TV presenter Angela (Manuela Velasco – a real TV presenter in her native Spain) recording an introduction for ‘While you’re asleep’, fluffing her lines, and being interrupted by sirens, giving the found footage film an immediate realistic look. What is most striking about the movie is just how believable and genuine the actors are. Angela is confident and relaxed, even when confronted by a dining hall full of male fire fighters, and throughout the beginning of the film, she is commanding, always in control, but personable and charming – the perfect TV personality. The firemen at the station react exactly how you imagine ‘normal people’ would when being filmed. They are playfully boisterous but respectful of Angela in the dinning hall, are a little awkward or self conscious when interviewed, and cast nervous but excited glances to the camera.

As a found footage film, multi award winning Rec is one of the best I have seen. The fact that we are viewing through the eyes of Pablo (Pablo Rosso), a TV cameraman, means not only is there a valid reason why the camera keeps rolling when the violence and terror escalates – after the old lady trapped in her apartment attacks and bites a policeman – but the quality of the camera work is of a high standard. Even the escalating shakiness and sound disruptions serve only to add to the sense of claustrophobia and confusion. At times, the camera is turned off leaving a silence and black screen that are as powerful as any image in creating anticipation and fear.

The high levels of realism – helped by the absence of a music score – continue faultlessly throughout the movie. The apartment block residents, a mixed bunch of a mother and child, a young family, an elderly couple, a young intern, and a bachelor, who have all been ordered by the police to gather in the building’s lobby, are all portrayed convincingly and naturally. To heighten the realism, in a scene where Alex (David Vert) falls down the stairwell, the other actors were not warned this would happen, and so their subsequent reactions captured on camera were genuine.

As the terror takes hold on everyone sealed inside the building, it is interesting to watch as order is lost to mayhem, characterised most notably when the authority figures, and the confident Angela descend into helplessness and hopelessness. Angela and Pablo’s role now is to ‘Tape everything’ that happens inside the building so that others will know what has happened.

Spanish with subtitles, Rec is fast paced, tense and exciting. I can’t find a single thing to fault. Beautifully shot and tightly written, with high levels of realism, Rec sweeps you off your feet and carries you on a tide of crazed ‘rage’ style zombies. Rec as been remade, almost scene for scene, as the American Quarantine (2008), but I recommend that you don’t get put off by the subtitles and watch Rec instead, it really is the superior of the two versions.

FLU Book Review Author Wayne Simmons

With winter fast approaching and all the runny noses that the season brings The Grumbling Gargoyle gives us her thoughts this week on Wayne Simmons FLU!!

Synopsis
A deadly flu virus has spread its contagion throughout Ireland before swiftly moving forward to continue upon its lethal course. Millions are infected by this mutated strain from which the only release is death itself...or at least it would be...if the dead would stay dead!
Desperate to contain the outbreak the Government resorts to drastic methods in the form of Quarantine Restrictions whereby infected families are sealed within their homes. Riotous panic soon overtakes reason as civilisation starts to fall apart. Splintered groups of survivors seek to find shelter and sustenance amidst the increasingly fetid landscape of the flesh foraging dead. However,  the virus is airborne........will they too succumb to this merciless plague and themselves become new recruits in this cadaverous army of the damned?

Review
Now then before we begin I would like you to imagine what it would feel like to be smacked in the face with the telephone directory. Not that pathetic little ‘leaflet’ we get these days but the good old fashioned directory as torn in half by wimpish wannabe strongmen back in the day when people used to telephone each other and have a c-o-n-v-e-r-s-a-t-i-o-n. Crazy times eh? Go on then...think about it! Right, now you’re probably wondering why I’m asking you to do this...and NO!..it’s nothing to do with hormones! I am asking you to do this because this is the best way I can describe the full impact of reading this short book by Wayne Simmons. It’s only, approximately, 262 pages long but it’s content is so packed with action and the storyline is so fulfilling that it feels like a much sturdier read leaving you quite breathless by the end of it. Just as you would be had you been assaulted by the aforementioned telephone directory!

I’m not going to lie to you and tell you that Simmons version of the Zombie is a particularly new take on the gruesome groaners, in many ways it isn’t but what it is is a damn good quality read! There’s a something happening continuously, plenty of surprises and the varied characters are not only a diverse group of rejects and misfits but they are a believable diverse group of rejects and misfits because they are....just like us! ( well, just like you really ...I happen to be lucky enough to be perfect...coff ).

Simmons mastery with the pen launches the reader from one mad situation to another as people and personalities clash exacerbating the already cataclysmic situation. A bit like here when the January Sales are on....but not as feral! These pages are the holding pen for characters such as Lark the tattooed drug addict, Pat a former IRA gunrunner, McFall a balaclava wearing taxi driver and churchgoer Karen hopped up on religion...what a spectacular mix!

Another worthy accolade regarding this book is that it’s an easy read. Hold on! Don’t jump to the conclusion that this reduces it’s depth...far from it!...it enhances the reading experience because the reader isn’t burdened by overly self indulgent verbal gymnastics as inflicted upon us by some authors. This is straight to the point dialogue that pulls no punches as it assaults the senses with its convincing realism. I enjoyed this book so much that when my dog sneezed I half thought of bricking it up in its kennel...( ok...I wouldn’t have actually done that...perhaps ).

I’m not going to go on any further because I despise reviews where the reader is exposed to the story as rewritten by the reviewer! Just go out...buy the book...and come to your own conclusion...Oh and maybe get a flu jab too....if it isn’t too late!

Rob Zombie's 'Lords of Salem' New Teaser Trailer

The wait is over, a new teaser trailer has arrived for the long awaited new feature 'Lords of Salem' from rock star turned horror maven Rob Zombie.

Synopsis
Heidi, a blonde rock chick, DJs at a local radio station, and together with the two Hermans (Whitey and Munster) forms part of the "Big H Radio Team". A mysterious wooden box containing a vinyl record arrives for Heidi, a gift of the Lords. She assumes it's a rock band on a mission to spread their word. As Heidi and Whitey play the Lords' record, it starts to play backwards, and Heidi experiences a flashback to a past trauma. Later, Whitey plays the Lords' record, dubbing them the Lords of Salem, and to his surprise, the record plays normally and is a massive hit with his listeners. The arrival of another wooden box from the Lords presents the Big H team with free tickets, posters and records to host a gig in Salem. Soon, Heidi and her cohorts are far from the rock spectacle they're expecting. The original Lords of Salem are returning and they're out for blood. (Courtesy of IMDB)

WATCH THE TEASER TRAILER HERE!!

Described as a throwback to the psychedelic satanic Horror Movies of the early 70s 'Lords of Salem' stars horror heavyweights, Rob's wife Sheri Moon Zombie (House of 1000 Corpses, The Devil's Rejects), Ken Foree (Dawn of the Dead, The Devil's Rejects) and Dee Wallace (The Howling, Popcorn).

The Evil Eye for one can't wait for this as Rob has a great way of encapsulating fear and horror movies that really get under your skin. However with no official release date set as yet we will have to wait till 2013, lets hope it's worth it!
