Cure (A Strandville Zombie Novel, Book One) Review Author Belinda Frisch

Synopsis

When Miranda and Scott’s marriage falls apart after the loss of their baby due to a genetic defect, Miranda decides to start a new life in Strandville. With her military background she finds work as a security officer at the Nixon healing and research centre, she soon realises not all is as it seems here.

After being taken and experimented on by Dr Nixon, Miranda finds she’s not alone, and that Dr Nixon will stop at nothing to further his research into curing cancer. When the zombies he is using to create the cure and his test subjects all escape, a chain of disastrous events unravel that will change the life and death of everyone forever.

Review
I am not normally a reader of horror/thriller books but after reading the interview with Belinda Frisch here at The Evil Eye and reading the reviews on the novel I was excited and intrigued and couldn’t wait to start reading it.  I was expecting a normal zombie saga, zombie outbreak, zombie eats man, hero saves the day. Whilst in essence it is that kind of book, the medical background and sense of desperation felt by relatives of the sick and missing makes it so much more.

Without ruining the book for you Dr Nixon is playing God and is all encompassed with his desire to cure cancer whatever the cost, this makes your heart beat out your chest with fear and concern. Nixon surrounds himself with what he believes to be like minded and controllable people, which is inevitably his downfall.

The underlying stories of love, desperation, friendship and honour are touching and completely believable, who wouldn’t do everything in their power to help the ones they love? The book is heart felt on one side and so very very dark on the other, which gives compelling reading. The medical side is detailed but not so much so you can’t understand it. Shock and awe are a continuing theme of the book, as every page leads to a new low for the Doctor and his lakies, and more danger and love for everyone else.

Overall the book is fantastic, compelling and extremely well written, leaving you thirsty for more; I for one cannot wait for the next instalment of the series.
